We’ve found that children tend to learn best when they are having fun and feeling good. In essence, they learn when they are motivated. For some of the children we meet, motivation can be very low, the challenges they may experience with their learning means that communication with others has become something too difficult, people become aversive because their questions and demands are too much. The single most important thing you can do for a child is to discover what they love, do what they love and within in, facilitate their learning.
A starting point with all our families is to have them complete a motivation profile, which can be a super fun process whereby you present lots and lots of activities and items to your child and record the things they love.
This means that sometimes our teaching sessions involve cooking, water fights, visiting museums, playing the playstation, or having a waterfight. If a child is doing something they love, they are invested and engaged, and THIS is the best time to teach!
