Routine can go out of the window in the summer holidays. Sleep ins and staying up late and holidays abroad can disrupt a child's normal routine. For all children getting back into a routine in good time for school recommencing is very important, and can help with parent's stress levels as well! Recreating a family schedule can be a fun activity.
1. Create a written family schedule which adds in all the important points of the day such as the time they get up, meal times, bathtimes and bed times, and even 'family time.'
2. Once this has been recreated, make sure you stick to it.
If bedtime is at 8pm, ensure they go to bed at 8pm consistently. Don't negotiate!
3. For children who experience anxiety in what comes next in their day, or struggle with transitions, having a simple visible routine which they are able to follow themselves can help them to know what they are doing and gain independence in getting ready.
Settling children back into a routine that mirrors what it will be when they return to school will help enormously with the adjustment of going back to school in the first week of school.
