Lots of people marvel at how lucky I am to enjoy my job and tell me that they know few, if any, people who love their work as much as I do. Many then go on to ask which part of my job I enjoy. Well, I enjoy it all. Honestly, I really do enjoy every part of my work. Of course there are challenges which are wide ranging and sometimes pretty significant, but I love to face a true challenge and work with my incredible team to overcome it.
My hubby asked me at the weekend to not talk about work whilst we were out at a dinner party, but really if people don’t want me to talk about work for a whole evening then they shouldn’t go out with me! EVERYTHING we do is behaviour and, as I LOVE behaviour and language, I am definitely going to talk about it.
This weekend just gone somebody had read some of Skinner’s research that I hadn’t! Of course behaviour analysis was going to come up!
But if I had to give a simple and singular answer, they would be:
Q: “what is the best bit of your job?”
A: the privilege of walking with individuals and families to achieve their goals and be the very best that they can be, teaching them to learn for themselves rather than being reliant on professionals for their whole life. Hmmm. Actually maybe it is teaching people to talk who have never spoken before.. no, no, it is designing new research and having the chance to influence policy. See? A single answer is impossible!
Q: “what do you like least about your work?”
A: paperwork, tidying my office and keeping up with policy change! I am pretty sure that can all be included in one category!
