Our negative thoughts can be unhelpful in enabling us to move forwards in life. Here is a suggestion for managing them;
-Make a decision about how you and your thoughts are going to work together. Research has shown you cannot avoid, suppress or stop the thoughts you have. If I ask you not to think about a white bear, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? It is these suppression attempts that lead us into anxiety and depression. But you can learn to be with them, and to keep going the way you want to go.
The trick is over time to notice your thoughts, for example, ‘I’m not good enough’ and then to make a decision about what you are going to do with it. Am I going to now spend time thinking about how I am not good enough, and if I do that, where will it take me? Or am I going to do something different? Will I keep active in my day so these thoughts don’t start to weigh me down.
