It can be common to see that whilst your child seems like an angelic, friendly child at home, at school they can be just don't seem to make friends or be invited back for play dates. This can be very confusing and upsetting for parents who can’t see what is going wrong with their child.
Some steps to understanding this better could be to:
Set up a playdate with a child who is willing and observe how your child playsLook out for the following areas
- Does your child take turns and share their toys?
- Do they direct conversational questions towards the person they are playing eg, what would you like to play now? What is your favourite game? What is your favourite movie?
- Are they able to use their words rather than their actions when they want something to be different, for example, please could we do a different game now? Excuse me, you are standing in the way of my train moving?
If from your observations you find that actually they hate taking turns, they don’t want to share and they aren’t holding such conversations with their peers, it could be time to explore further supporting them in developing some social skills.
