An estimated 7 people out of every 1000 develop a panic disorder at some point and the prevalence among all age groups and sexes is roughly the same.
Panic disorder is characterised by severe panic attacks, over breathing, palpitations and chest pain, and usually stems from extreme anxiety. Panic attacks can only last a few minutes as our bodies cannot sustain that level of energy beyond that, however, people often describe feeling they are going crazy or that they might die because of the level of panic they feel.
Sometimes the trigger for a panic attack is known, but some panic attacks occur without people knowing why.
The good news is that through Applied Behaviour Analysis we can pin point the cause of distress and be successful in overcoming it.
